In December 2020 Tycon Companies purchased the former Union Gospel Mission property on Snail Lake in Shoreview. Tycon's proposal to build a 55-foot-tall, 660-foot-wide, 268-unit market-rate apartment complex and 29 houses (also market rate) on that property. The scale of the project and its shoreland location would create a littany of potential problems for the lake and the surrounding streets and neighborhoods. After hearing concerns and criticism from the city planning commission, the city council and Shoreview residents, Tycon is revising its proposal, per city requirements. It is not yet known when Tycon will submit its revised plan or what that will look like.
No proposal is pending. Tycon withdrew its development phase submittal on September 28, 2022. The development phase proposal was never provided to the public.
On January 26, 2023, Tycon filed a lawsuit against the Minnesota DNR misrepresenting that Tycon's original proposal was for 203 apartment and condominium units, 7 lakeshore lots 22 villas and various docks. The court ruled against Tycon in case 62-cv-22-6669. The court records can be accessed at Case Search - Minnesota Court Records Online (MCRO) (state.mn.us).
